Steam Outage Disrupts Store and Online Games on December 24, Services Fully Restored
Steam experienced a widespread outage beginning at approximately 1PM ET on December 24, preventing users from accessing the game store and playing online titles. While Valve did not issue a public statement acknowledging the disruption, SteamDB’s unofficial Steam Status page indicated that multiple services—including the Steam Store, Steam Community, and Steam Web APIs—were offline during the incident.
According to DownDetector, more than 6,000 outage reports were recorded around 1:15PM ET. Users also reported being unable to access Steam through Valve’s mobile applications. The outage appeared to extend to APIs supporting Valve’s online multiplayer games, affecting titles such as Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike 2.

By around 4PM ET, Steam services began showing signs of recovery. As of 6PM ET, the platform was largely operational across PC, mobile, and Mac clients, though some users continued to experience intermittent errors. Certain services remained sluggish, and SteamDB reported that several Valve online games were either down or only partially functional. A follow-up check at 4AM on December 25 confirmed that all services had been fully restored, with the Steam Web API, Store, and Community operating normally and all games functioning as expected.
Steam’s most recent major outage prior to this incident occurred in October, when both the store and online services were unavailable for roughly an hour. Earlier in September, the launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong caused temporary disruptions across Steam, the Xbox Store, and Nintendo’s eShop, driven by an unusually high volume of simultaneous downloads.
